iOS UICollectionView The Complete Guide teaches you everything you need to know to to take advantage of Apple's new user interface, UICollectionView. UICollectionView is a content- and layout-agnostic tool that developers can use to display content in applications. User interfaces created with collection views are some of the most immersive and distinctive interfaces in iOS applications. But to get the most out of UICollectionView, developers need to understand its complexity. Author and iOS developer Ash Furrow shows you how to leverage this amazing tool to create intuitive, immersive experiences within your own applications.
Coverage includes

  • A brief introduction to the Model View Controller paradigm, which is used throughout the book
  • How to set up UICollectionView, using .xib files and Storyboards
  • The basics of cell use
  • Contextualizing content through the use of supplementary views
  • An exploration of the ICollectionViewDataSource and UICollectionViewDelegate protocols
  • Subclassing flow layouts and subclassing UICollectionViewLayout directly to create a wide variety of custom layouts
  • Adding interactivity to layouts, primarily through the use of gesture recognizers

Approximately 176 pages.

The author lost me on chapter 4. I admit, I'm not an expert iOS user interface programmer, but I felt that the book spends way too much time talking about code and listing it. The author spends very little time explaining the basic concepts of the collection view components or providing simple examples. Hence, by chapter 4, I simply gave up. If you're an advanced iOS user interface developer and you already have a strong understanding of the collection view architecture and design, then this book is probably for you. If not, then I don't recommend it as a staring point to learn the topic. Blogs, online tutorials, and Apple's documentation is probably a better place start.

Also, running the samples based on the text generally does not work, which is really frustrating. Because I don't like wasting time when I'm learning. For example, if you create the project for Listing 2.12, the author fails to tell you that you must copy the images into the project or the sample will crash. If you're going to have running samples in a book, the steps should be clearly defined and idiot proof.

In conclusion, I might use this book as a reference in the future, but I certainly won't try reading again until I have a much better understanding of the topic gained through experience and other learning resources. I also think the author should consider revising the book for iOS 7.

iOS UICollectionView The Complete Guide Mobile Programming eBook Ash Furrow Reviews

This book gives a very solid introduction to UICollectionView. I found chapter 5 particularly helpful in building customizable layouts. Sometimes its hard to see the forest for the trees in all of the code examples, but I found that this book is really good in conjunction with the high level view presented in Apple's programming guide.
Overall a good read. About 80% of the content isn't that new if you've used collection view a few times before.
